Playa del Carmen sits on the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo, about 55 km by road south of Cancún airport. Federal Highway 307 runs through it from south to north: on the sea side are Centro, Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) and the beach neighbourhoods; on the other side, the colonias and residential developments where most year-round residents live. The ferry to Cozumel leaves from its pier.
